The Story Behind the Design

Inspired by a playful Gaelic tradition the “Four Morning Whiskies” celebrate the poetic relationship between daily ritual and the dram. This unique whisky glass features one of four Gaelic phrases, each capturing a step in the morning routine of a Highlander — from first waking to stirring the porridge pot. Whether gifted as a set or enjoyed individually, these glasses offer a nod to old folklore and a toast to timeless tradition.

Each glass is engraved with one of the following:

  • Sgailc-nid – "The blow of the nest" (your first dram upon waking)
  • Friochd-uilinn – "Nip of the elbow" (for sitting up in bed)
  • Deoch cas rùisgte – "Drink of bare feet" (for getting dressed)
  • Deoch bhleith – "The drink of grinding" (for preparing the porridge)

Choose your favourite phrase or collect them all — a perfect conversation piece for whisky lovers and heritage enthusiasts alike.

Traditional Sandblast Engraving

For over four decades, every glass that leaves our studio has been engraved using a time-honoured sandblasting technique, a craft rooted in precision, patience, and the belief that meaningful gifts deserve more than a quick machine-made mark. Unlike surface printing or shallow laser etching, sandblast engraving cuts softly into the glass to create a deep, permanent finish with a beautifully tactile feel. It’s the reason our designs look crisp from every angle and remain flawless for a lifetime.

  1. Artwork Refined With Care

Your chosen design or personalisation is transformed into precise vector artwork, a format that captures every fine line, curve, and serif. This allows us to prepare an engraving layout that balances perfectly on the shape of the glass. Whether it’s a portrait, a crest, or a message, every element is positioned by hand to ensure it sits naturally within the piece.

  2. Creating the Single-Use Stencil

The artwork is then transferred onto a specialist stencil using UV exposure. Each stencil is created for one single engraving only, never reused, which means the edges remain sharp and the details stay crisp. The stencil is carefully hand-applied and burnished onto the glass to protect every area that should remain clear.

  3. Hand-Engraved Using Fine Aluminium Oxide

The glass is taken into the blasting cabinet, where a controlled stream of fine aluminium oxide gently cuts into the exposed areas of the surface. This stage is done entirely by hand, allowing us to deepen lines, soften shading, and shape textures in a way machines simply cannot replicate. Each piece takes time — but the result is unmistakable: a smooth satin finish with real depth and character.

  4. Finishing, Polishing & Inspection

Once engraved, the stencil is removed and the glass is thoroughly cleaned and polished to reveal the final detail. Every piece is then checked for balance, clarity, depth and alignment. Only when it meets our studio’s standards is it gift-boxed and ready to become part of someone’s story.

Sandblast engraving has been at the heart of our work since 1982. It remains the most beautiful and enduring method of personalising glass, a blend of heritage craft and modern precision. From small keepsakes to intricate commissions, every piece is made by hand, one at a time, from our studio in Fife.
