The Story Behind the Design
A map of the Isle of Wight, celebrating an island shaped by coastline, sailing traditions and maritime heritage
Separated from the mainland by the Solent, the Isle of Wight has long been shaped by its coastline, ferry crossings and network of roads linking towns, villages and harbours. This engraving centres on the island itself, combining its recognisable outline with the road network that connects communities across the landscape, accompanied by sailing boats, ferries and a traditional compass rose that reflect its enduring relationship with the sea.
Prepared specifically for engraving on glass, the illustration simplifies the island's geography into a clear, legible composition while preserving its distinctive form. The surrounding maritime elements frame the map without overwhelming it, allowing the coastline, crossings and waterways to remain the focus. It is an interpretation of an island where travel by land and sea are inseparable, creating a design that reflects both the geography of the place and the journeys that define it.
The engraving is centred and spaced to maintain balance within the available engraving area.
