The Story Behind the Design
The North Coast 500 traced around the glass in a continuous engraved route through the Scottish Highlands. This wraparound design follows the NC500 from Inverness around Scotland's northern coastline and back again, marking the towns, villages and stopping points encountered along the route. The engraved line travels continuously around the glass, with place names positioned alongside the route and NC500 · 516 MILES / 830 KM incorporated into the composition.
The North Coast 500 forms a circular journey through some of the most distinctive landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. Beginning and ending in Inverness, its 516 miles travel through Easter Ross, Caithness, Sutherland and Wester Ross.
This design traces that journey around the whisky glass as one continuous route. Inverness, Dingwall and Invergordon lead north towards Dornoch, Golspie, Helmsdale and Wick before the route reaches John O'Groats and turns west across the northern coast.
From Durness, the engraving follows the western section south through places including Scourie, Kylesku, Lochinver, Ullapool, Gairloch, Torridon and Applecross before returning towards Inverness.
Drawn specifically for engraving on glass, the route, stopping points and typography have been arranged around the cylindrical form so that the journey gradually reveals itself as the glass is turned. The design has no single viewpoint. Following the engraving around the glass becomes part of reading the route itself.
The result is a map defined by the journey: 516 miles of the Scottish Highlands wrapped around a whisky glass.
The engraving is centred and spaced to maintain balance within the available engraving area.
