The Story Behind the Design
Neither wholly seal nor wholly woman, the Selkie belongs to the threshold between sea and shore. In Scottish and northern folklore she moves between two worlds, carrying both freedom and longing with her. This engraving captures the moment of transition, her figure emerging from the water as flowing hair becomes wave
Throughout Scottish and northern folklore, the Selkie moves between two worlds, living as both seal and woman. She belongs to the shoreline, where land and sea meet, carrying stories of freedom, longing and return with every tide.
This engraving brings both forms together into a single composition. The seal rises through the water as flowing hair dissolves into waves, allowing the boundaries between creature, sea and human figure to disappear. Rather than illustrating a single tale, the design explores the enduring symbolism of transformation and the pull of the place we call home.
Created for the Winter Spirits collection, the Selkie represents the restless beauty of the northern coast, where mythology, memory and the sea remain inseparable.
Developed specifically for glass, the composition preserves movement and clarity while allowing the finer details to emerge as light moves across the engraved surface.
