Winter Spirits: A Study in Myth and Form
Share
This collection draws on northern folklore, interpreted through a series of engraved designs prepared for glass.
The focus is on restrained forms, where each figure is suggested rather than fully described.
The Motifs
The collection is built around a small group of figures.
-
The Deer Mother
A life-giving form, with antlers extending into branches and star-like elements. -
The Snow Hare
Set mid-leap beneath a crescent of snowflake forms. -
The Selkie
Emerging from the water, with the transition between figure and sea held within the line. -
The Cailleach
Integrated into the ridgeline, where the figure and landscape begin to merge.
Each is prepared as a contained composition, allowing the reference to remain clear without over-definition.
The Centrepiece
The Aurora Decanter sits at the centre of the collection.
Its surface is engraved with a continuous movement of line, drawn from the shifting forms of northern light. The design is prepared to move across the glass without interruption, following the curvature of the vessel.
Preparation and Engraving
All pieces are prepared for sandblasting, with attention given to how light interacts with the engraved surface.
Linework is adjusted for clarity and spacing, ensuring the designs remain legible while holding their intended form.
Outcome
The collection presents a series of figures, drawn from familiar references and held in simple form, where each design suggests more than it states.
