The Story Behind the Design
Inspired by the Aurora Borealis, this wraparound engraving captures ribbons of light flowing across the northern sky above a distant horizon. Fine vertical lines build shifting curtains of light, creating a composition that changes subtly as the vessel is turned.
Across the northern world, the aurora has inspired stories long before it was understood. It has been imagined as spirits, celestial fires and messages carried across the winter sky, its silent movement inviting wonder in every generation.
This engraving explores that sense of mystery through movement rather than realism. Sweeping bands of finely engraved lines rise above a simple horizon, their changing heights suggesting the flowing curtains of light that drift across the darkness. Small stars scattered across the composition reinforce the stillness of the winter night without competing with the aurora itself.
Developed as a continuous wrap around engraving, the composition moves uninterrupted around the glass, changing as light passes through.
