The Story Behind the Design
Few Scottish legends are tied so closely to a place as the Loch Ness Monster. Stories of a creature beneath the dark waters of Loch Ness have circulated for generations, leaving the boundary between folklore, observation and imagination deliberately unresolved.
The composition catches Nessie rising cautiously from the loch, her attention turned towards a distant boat. Water and shoreline establish the setting, while the inscription Nessiteras rhombopteryx uses the tongue in cheek scientific name once proposed for the creature. Nessie appears beneath.
The scene leaves the encounter open ended. Something is there. Exactly what it is remains the point of the story.
