The Story Behind the Design

A hand engraved interpretation of the Loch Ness Monster rising from the waters of Loch Ness, with a distant boat on the horizon and the scientific name Nessiteras rhombopteryx engraved beneath. The composition balances folklore, landscape and quiet tension in a design inspired by Scotland's most enduring mystery.

Few legends are as closely tied to a place as the Loch Ness Monster. For generations, stories of a mysterious creature beneath the dark waters have travelled far beyond the Highlands, becoming part of Scotland's folklore and imagination.

Rather than depicting a dramatic encounter, this engraving captures a quieter moment. The creature rises cautiously from the loch, its gaze turned towards a distant boat, leaving the question of what is being witnessed entirely open to interpretation. The surrounding water and shoreline create a sense of place, while the engraved title, Nessiteras rhombopteryx, references the tongue in cheek scientific name once proposed for the creature, with "Nessie" included beneath in recognition of the name by which the legend is known throughout the world.

Whether regarded as folklore, local tradition or an unsolved mystery, Nessie remains one of Scotland's most enduring stories. This design celebrates that sense of curiosity, inviting each viewer to decide for themselves what may lie beneath the surface.

Developed specifically for glass, the composition preserves movement and clarity while allowing the finer details to emerge as light moves across the engraved surface.
