The Story Behind the Design
A hand engraved interpretation of the Cailleach, inspired by Scottish folklore. Her figure emerges from mountain and storm, where rock, wind and landscape become part of a single enduring presence.
Among the oldest figures in Scottish folklore, the Cailleach is the keeper of winter, the shaper of mountains and the force that governs storm and stone. Stories tell of her carving the landscape, raising hills and summoning the weather that defines the northern winter.
This engraving imagines the Cailleach as part of the landscape itself. Her form rises from the mountains, while flowing hair becomes driven by the wind and broken rock gathers around her. Rather than illustrating a single tale, the composition explores the enduring idea that the land itself can hold memory, presence and power.
Created for the Winter Spirits collection, the Cailleach represents the ancient character of the northern landscape, where mythology and nature remain inseparable.
Developed specifically for glass, the composition preserves movement and clarity while allowing the finer details to emerge as light moves across the engraved surface.
