The Story Behind the Design
The Duke of Wellington statue has stood outside Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art since the nineteenth century, but it is the traffic cone that has made the figure one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
Repeatedly placed on the statue’s head over many years, the cone has become inseparable from the way the monument is now seen. This design brings the mounted figure and its unofficial addition together, preserving the formal outline of the statue while making the familiar cone part of the composition.
The result is a subject that belongs as much to contemporary Glasgow as to the original monument.
