The Black Cuillin form one of Britain's most dramatic mountain landscapes, their jagged ridge rising above the western coastline of the Isle of Skye. Drawn from a shoreline viewpoint, this illustration captures the relationship between sea, rock and mountain, leading the eye from the foreground boulders across the water to the unmistakable skyline beyond.
Prepared from reference photography and interpreted for engraving, the composition explores the contrasting textures of the rocky shore, the still water and the sharp outlines of the Cuillin themselves. Fine linework and carefully judged areas of contrast preserve the character of the landscape while creating an engraving that remains crisp, enduring and full of depth as light moves through the glass.
