The Story Behind the Design

An original interpretation of Liverpool's iconic Liver Birds, available as Bella, Bertie or the pair together, celebrating one of Britain's most recognisable civic symbols.

Watching over Liverpool's waterfront for more than a century, the Liver Birds have become enduring symbols of the city's identity. Local tradition tells us that Bella watches over the sailors returning home, while Bertie keeps watch over those leaving the city. Legend says that if the two birds were ever to face one another, or if they were ever to fly away, Liverpool itself would cease to exist.

This engraved design is available in three variations. Choose Bella or Bertie as individual designs, ideal for pairing across two glasses, or select Bella & Bertie together on a single glass. In the paired composition, the two birds deliberately face away from one another, echoing the Liverpool legend that keeps watch over the city. Each version is an original interpretation created in our own studio, celebrating one of Britain's most distinctive civic emblems.

The design is prepared to emphasise the distinctive features that have made the subject a recognised symbol of place and identity.
