A 360° Engraved Bowl: Jardin Wraparound

This commission involved the engraving of a presentation bowl using a full 360° Jardin design.

The piece was prepared as a continuous scene, with a personalised inscription marking 25 years at the Village Show in Keysoe.

Reference and Layout

The wraparound design required careful planning before engraving.

The artwork was divided into three sections rather than four, allowing the composition to flow cleanly around the bowl and avoiding repeated elements aligning opposite one another. Placement was tested in paper form first, with adjustments made to spacing and continuity.

The Jardin design is particularly suited to a presentation bowl, allowing the engraving to be experienced as a continuous scene rather than a single front-facing image.

A wraparound composition encourages the viewer to move around the piece, revealing different details as the bowl is turned. The three-part layout helped maintain that sense of continuity while avoiding obvious repetition around the circumference.

The personalised inscription was incorporated within the scene rather than treated as a separate element, ensuring it formed part of the overall composition while still clearly marking the occasion.

Preparation

Each section was prepared as part of a single-use stencil.

The personalised inscription was cut separately and positioned within the overall layout, ensuring it sat in balance with the surrounding design.

Engraving

Once applied, the stencil was engraved using sandblasting.

As the process progresses, visibility reduces, making pre-alignment critical. Final checks are carried out through alignment and surface feel before the stencil is removed.

Outcome

The finished bowl presents a continuous engraved scene, with the design moving uninterrupted around the full circumference.

Prepared in separate sections but intended to be experienced as a single composition, the piece demonstrates how a wraparound engraving can use the form of the glassware itself as part of the design.
