Brough Superior SS80: Engraved Decanter and Glass

This commission involved preparing an engraved decanter and matching whisky glass based on a photographic reference of a 1937 Brough Superior SS80.

Reference and Preparation

The source image included both the motorcycle and associated elements, including a pair of riding gloves.

The design was redrawn as engraving artwork, refining linework and proportion to ensure the form of the motorcycle would translate clearly to glass. Particular attention was given to the profile, including mudguards, tank shape and spoke structure, along with the positioning of the additional elements.

The layout was prepared to balance image and inscription across the surface of the decanter.

Engraving

Once approved, the artwork was transferred to stencil and applied to both the decanter and the accompanying glass.

The engraving was carried out using sandblasting, producing a consistent etched finish with sufficient depth to hold the detail of the drawing.

Outcome

The completed pieces present a detailed vehicle study, translated from photographic reference into a balanced engraved composition.
