Brough Superior SS80: Engraved Decanter and Glass

This commission involved preparing an engraved decanter and matching whisky glass based on a photographic reference of a 1937 Brough Superior SS80.

Reference and Preparation

The source image included both the motorcycle and associated elements, including a pair of riding gloves.

Rather than tracing the photograph directly, the motorcycle was redrawn as engraving artwork. This involved interpreting the reference image and rebuilding the machine in linework suited to engraving, while retaining the character of the original motorcycle.

Particular attention was given to the profile, including the distinctive tank shape, mudguards, wheel geometry and spoke structure. The drawing required several hours of work, balancing mechanical detail with clarity so that the motorcycle would remain recognisable when engraved onto glass.

The accompanying gloves were incorporated as a secondary element, helping to place the motorcycle within a broader riding context without competing with the main subject.

The inscription was also adapted to reflect the subject. Rather than using a conventional birthday message, the wording "First Registered 1955" borrowed the language of vehicle registration records, creating a subtle link between Jim and the motorcycle itself.

Engraving

Once approved, the artwork was transferred to stencil and applied to both the decanter and the accompanying glass.

The engraving was carried out using sandblasting, producing a consistent etched finish with sufficient depth to hold the detail of the drawing.

Outcome

The completed pieces present a detailed study of the motorcycle, translated from photographic reference into engraving artwork before being transferred to glass.

While based on a single photograph, the finished design required considerable redrawing and refinement to create a composition suited to engraving while preserving the character of the original machine.
