The Story Behind the Design
The narrow ridge of the Aonach Eagach in Glencoe, one of Scotland's most celebrated mountain traverses
This illustration shows the rugged cliffs and broken ridgeline of Aonach Eagach, the narrow quartzite ridge that dominates the northern side of Glencoe. Prepared from reference photography and carefully interpreted for engraving, it captures the steep rock faces, fractured buttresses and layered slopes that make this one of Scotland's most recognisable mountain landscapes.
Drawn specifically for engraving on glass, the composition simplifies and adjusts natural detail while preserving the character of the mountain. Variations in line weight and texture allow the changing light to reveal different parts of the landscape as the glass is turned, creating an illustration that rewards repeated viewing. Line weight, spacing and proportion are carefully adjusted throughout the design to suit the form and scale of the glass.
The engraving is arranged to preserve the character and proportions of the landscape, maintaining clarity and recognisability when engraved.
