The Story Behind the Design
A detailed engraving of Blairhall Colliery, commemorating one of West Fife's most significant coal mines and its industrial heritage.
Blairhall Colliery was one of the defining industries of West Fife, employing generations of miners before production ended in 1969. Its distinctive twin winding gear became a familiar landmark, representing both the engineering of the coalfield and the communities that grew around it.
This engraving interprets the colliery through its recognisable structure, preserving the character of the pithead, winding towers and surrounding buildings while adapting the composition for clarity on glass. Rather than recreating a historical photograph, the design focuses on the forms that made Blairhall instantly recognisable, creating a lasting tribute to an important part of Fife's industrial history.
The composition is arranged to sit cleanly within the glass, allowing the form to remain legible without crowding the surface.
