The Story Behind the Design
The stag emerges from a network of flowing interlaced lines, with the antlers remaining clearly recognisable while the body gradually opens into more abstract pattern and ornament.
Curving strands pass through and beyond the figure, while patterned sections and repeated marks create rhythm across the composition. The animal and surrounding linework are drawn as one continuous structure, allowing the stag to appear to form from the interlace itself.
The design is built around the transition between recognisable animal form and decorative abstraction, with figure, line and ornament treated as parts of the same drawing.
