The Story Behind the Design
Two powerful horses rise from turbulent water in a hand engraved interpretation of the legendary kelpies. Inspired by Scottish folklore, the composition captures movement, flowing manes and crashing waves in a design that is equally compelling as mythology or as an elegant equestrian study.
Throughout Scottish folklore, kelpies are the shape shifting water spirits said to inhabit lochs and rivers. Most often taking the form of magnificent horses, they are creatures of beauty, power and mystery, drawing travellers towards the water before vanishing beneath the surface.
Rather than depicting the darker side of the legend, this engraving celebrates the grace and movement of the kelpie itself. Two horses emerge from swirling water, their flowing manes echoing the currents beneath them as they run side by side. The composition is full of energy while remaining deliberately timeless.
Whether appreciated as a piece inspired by Scottish mythology or simply as an expressive study of horses in motion, the design captures the enduring fascination of creatures that belong somewhere between the natural world and imagination.
Developed specifically for glass, the composition preserves movement and clarity while allowing the finer details to emerge as light moves across the engraved surface.
