The Story Behind the Design

A rearing horse formed from flowing Celtic inspired knotwork, where interwoven lines create a single continuous composition that merges animal and ornament.

Rather than treating the horse as a figure decorated with Celtic knotwork, this design allows the two to become one. Flowing strands twist through the composition, shaping the animal's body before continuing beyond it, so there is no clear point where ornament ends and the horse begins.

Inspired by the visual language of early Celtic manuscripts, carved stone and metalwork, the engraving follows the tradition of continuous line rather than literal representation. As the eye moves across the design, new details emerge from the interwoven forms, inviting repeated viewing rather than revealing everything at once.

Part of the Entwined Echoes collection, the design explores the way stories, symbols and memory can become intertwined over time. Each piece is created as a contemporary interpretation of Celtic ornament, shaped for the clarity and movement of engraved glass.

The engraving is arranged so that form and knotwork flow together as a single continuous composition, preserving clarity and rhythm when engraved.
