A Community Plaque: The Pantry, Saline

This commission was prepared for a local initiative in Saline.

The Pantry operates as a community hub, providing access to fresh produce and essentials through a weekly scheme, while also acting as a shared social space.

The Commission

The plaque was created for the Pantry’s annual “Kings of the Pantry” award, a light-hearted part of the wider community event.

The wording was supplied as part of the brief, while the crown motif was introduced during preparation to reinforce the theme of the award and provide a simple visual focal point. The intention was to support the informal character of the event without overwhelming the inscription itself.

The design was prepared to reflect that tone, keeping the layout clear and legible while allowing for the playful nature of the award title and recipients.

Preparation and Engraving

As with all pieces, the artwork was balanced for clarity on the chosen material, ensuring text spacing and alignment would read cleanly once engraved.

The design was transferred to stencil and sandblasted to achieve a consistent etched finish.

Outcome

The finished plaque is displayed during the Pantry’s weekly sessions, forming part of an ongoing, informal tradition within the group.

A small piece, but one that sits within a regular rhythm of use.

Not every commission marks a formal occasion. Some are created to recognise participation, celebrate community and become part of the traditions that develop around the groups they serve.
