Wantage Lodge 3178: Crest Preparation for Tankard Engraving

Many masonic heraldic crests are created for paper, paint or embroidery rather than glass.

This commission began with a painted crest supplied by Wantage Lodge No. 3178 and required the design to be reworked for engraving before production could begin.

Preparing the Crest

The original artwork contained more than twenty individual elements, including supporters, shield detail, motto text and heraldic devices.

Each section was reviewed and redrawn as engraving artwork, adjusting line weights, spacing and internal detail to ensure the composition would remain clear once reduced to tankard scale.

The objective was not to simplify the crest unnecessarily, but to preserve as much structure and character as possible while ensuring the finished engraving remained legible on glass.

Resolving the Layout

Alongside the crest, the commission included personalised text identifying the recipient, lodge and year of office.

Early discussions explored the possibility of incorporating additional decorative elements around the design. However, the available engraving area was already carrying a substantial amount of information.

The final layout concentrated on maintaining clarity, allowing the crest to remain the dominant feature while integrating the inscription within the overall composition.

Engraving the Tankard

Once the artwork had been approved, the design was transferred to stencil and engraved using traditional sandblasting techniques.

Careful preparation ensured that fine details within the crest remained distinct while the inscription retained good readability alongside the larger heraldic elements.

Outcome

The completed tankard presents a detailed heraldic composition in a format suited to regular use.

From the supplied painted crest through to the finished engraving, the project demonstrates how complex heraldic artwork can be interpreted and adapted for glass while retaining the character of the original design.
