Wantage Lodge 3178: Crest Preparation for Tankard Engraving
Share
This commission involved preparing and engraving the full crest of Wantage Lodge No. 3178 onto a glass tankard.
Reference and Preparation
The original crest was supplied as a painted image.
The design contained a large number of individual elements, including supporters, shield detail and motto text. Each component was redrawn as engraving artwork, refining line weights and spacing to ensure the full composition would remain legible at tankard scale.
Particular attention was given to how smaller elements would translate once reduced, maintaining clarity without losing structure.
Layout
The crest was positioned centrally on the tankard, with personalised text set beneath.
The inscription included the recipient’s name, title, date and lodge name, arranged to sit in balance with the main emblem.
Engraving
Once approved, the artwork was transferred to stencil and applied to the glass.
The engraving was carried out using sandblasting, producing a consistent etched finish across both crest and text.
Outcome
The finished piece presents the full crest in a clear, reduced form, with the supporting inscription integrated below.
A detailed emblem, resolved for glass through careful preparation.
