More Than a Portrait: Interpreting Memories in Glass

When someone commissions an engraved portrait of a much loved dog, the photograph is only the beginning. Our role isn't to reproduce every detail exactly as it appears. It's to understand what makes that image meaningful, then prepare artwork that works beautifully in glass while remaining faithful to the memory it represents.

One recent commission illustrates this perfectly.

A Favourite Photograph

Shadow had recently passed away. A close friend wanted to commission a set of four engraved wine glasses as a gift for Shadow's owner.

Among the photographs supplied was one that immediately stood out. Shadow was wearing a blue hoodie printed with the words We Believe In The Power Of Love. It wasn't a formal portrait, but it captured exactly the expression and character everyone recognised.

The photograph became the starting point for the artwork.

Looking Beyond the Photograph

When preparing artwork for engraving, every element has to earn its place.

The hoodie formed part of the memory, but visually it competed with Shadow's portrait. The words printed across the front, however, carried genuine meaning.

Rather than engraving the clothing exactly as photographed, we separated the message from the garment and incorporated it beneath the portrait, allowing both the dog's likeness and the sentiment to remain clear.

The result is a composition that preserves what mattered most while creating a design suited to glass.

Preparing Artwork for Glass

Every commission is individually redrawn in our Fife studio. Photographs are assessed for contrast, detail and composition before artwork is prepared specifically for the object being engraved.

Sometimes very little changes. At other times, subtle adjustments strengthen the final design while remaining completely faithful to the original memory.

The goal is always the same: to create an engraving that feels natural on glass and remains recognisable for years to come.

From Memory to Gift

The completed artwork was engraved onto a set of four wine glasses, creating a lasting tribute that captured both Shadow's appearance and the message that accompanied one of his favourite photographs.

For us, that's what bespoke engraving is really about. Not simply reproducing an image, but preserving the story behind it.
