Engraved Whisky Bottle: A Personal Commission

This commission involved the engraving of a single malt whisky bottle, prepared with a personal message intended for a future occasion.

The bottle was commissioned by a father for his son on his wedding day. At the time the work was prepared, he knew he would not be present to see the occasion himself.

The engraving was intended to ensure that a message could still be there when the day arrived.

Reference and Preparation

The wording was supplied by the customer and prepared as a simple inscription suited to the proportions of the bottle.

Given the nature of the commission, the objective was not to create a decorative composition, but to allow the message itself to remain the focus. The layout was therefore kept deliberately restrained, ensuring it could be read clearly while sitting comfortably within the form of the bottle.

A digital proof was prepared first, allowing the wording and placement to be reviewed before engraving began.

Material Considerations

The bottle included an original label that was intended to remain in place.

To protect it during production, the masking and handling process was adapted to prevent both abrasive material and moisture reaching the label while engraving was carried out.

Engraving

The design was transferred to stencil and sandblasted directly into the glass surface, creating a permanent satin-etched inscription.

The engraved text becomes part of the bottle itself rather than a separate applied element, ensuring the message remains long after the occasion it was prepared for.

Outcome

The completed bottle carries a message intended to be discovered at a specific moment in time.

Some commissions celebrate an event as it happens. Others are prepared in anticipation of it.

This piece belonged to the latter.
