Preparing a Squadron Crest for Glass Engraving

Translating Detailed Insignia for Glass Engraving

Military and squadron crests often contain intricate symbolism, combining shields, mottos, animals and heraldic elements into a single emblem. Translating that level of detail into glass engraving requires careful preparation before the design ever reaches the glass.

This commission came from a squadron leader who wished to present a leaving gift featuring the squadron’s crest. The reference material provided included the full insignia, complete with its motto and decorative heraldic elements.

As with all crest commissions, the first step was to prepare engraving-ready artwork. Designs intended for embroidery or printed materials often contain extremely fine lines and small lettering. These elements must be carefully interpreted so that the finished engraving remains clear, balanced and readable once sandblasted into glass.

Using the supplied reference, the crest was redrawn and adjusted for engraving, maintaining the essential symbolism while ensuring that each component would translate cleanly into the finished piece. The result is a design that respects the identity of the original crest while working harmoniously with the engraving process.

Gifts like these often mark important moments of transition within organisations, and the permanence of engraved glass makes them a fitting way to recognise service, commitment and shared history.
