Preparing a Naval Crest for Glass Engraving

A Bespoke Commission with Careful Artwork Preparation

Naval crests often contain intricate heraldic detail. Shields, crowns, animals and mottos are combined into a single emblem that represents the identity and history of a ship or naval unit. Translating this level of detail into glass engraving requires careful preparation before the design ever reaches the glass.

This commission involved engraving a naval crest onto a traditional tankard, accompanied by a personalised inscription beneath. As always, the first step was to redraw the emblem as engraving artwork so the lines and lettering would translate clearly when sandblasted into glass.

Partway through the process, the customer realised the reference image they had sent was not the correct crest. Fortunately, the tankard had not yet reached the engraving stage. Because every design passes through artwork preparation and approval first, it was simply a case of preparing the correct version and updating the proof.

Moments like this are exactly why we work the way we do. Each commission moves through a series of quiet checks before it ever enters the engraving cabinet. It takes a little longer, but it means the finished piece reflects the design the customer truly intended.

When working with crests and insignia in particular, that care matters. These emblems often carry history, identity and personal connection, and our role is to translate them faithfully into glass.
