The Art of Accuracy: How We Bring Designs to Life on Glass

Introduction

Engraving glass might look effortless once the piece is polished and finished — but every line, curve, and letter has been carefully planned, aligned, and checked before the first grain of sand ever touches the surface. Accuracy is at the heart of what we do, and it’s often the part customers never get to see. Today, we’re sharing a glimpse behind the scenes.

From Film to Firing Glass

One of our recent projects involved a set of traditional firing glasses. To guide the engraving, we print the master artwork onto a sheet of inkjet film. This stencil is then placed over the glass so we can check how the design aligns with the shape before engraving begins.

In the photo, you can see the master design held infront of the finished piece, the bridge between concept and final creation. A second image shows the glasses mid-process, still taped and masked with photoresist film, after being individually sandblasted. It’s not glamorous, but it’s where accuracy is revealed.

The Molecules Glass: Precision in Practice

Another commission pushed accuracy to its limits, a whisky glass featuring 16 different molecules, engraved as a wraparound design for a scientist. Getting it right meant working through pages of revisions before the stencil was finalised.

Once approved, the process moved to the studio: John carefully aligned the photoresist film against a printed draft, then applied it by hand to the curved surface of the glass. Every millimetre mattered. Only when the film was perfectly seated could the engraving begin.

The end result looks clean and effortless, but it represents hours of planning, adjusting, and quiet concentration.

Why Accuracy Matters

To us, accuracy isn’t just technical, it’s emotional. A firing glass engraved for a toast, or a scientific gift covered in molecules, deserves to feel balanced and right in the hand. The straightness of a line or the spacing of a pattern isn’t noticed when it’s perfect, but it is felt. That’s why we take the time.
